Jean-Philippe Lazure

Mr Fortier-Lazure is a proud graduate of the Canadian Opera Company’s Ensemble Studio. His past season with the Canadian Opera Company has seen him performing the roles of Le Remendado in Carmen, Don Curzio in Le Nozze di Figaro, and Giuseppe in La Traviata. Alongside his colleagues, Mr Fortier-Lazure performed roles of Conte Almaviva in Barbiere di Siviglia, and Don Basilio in Le Nozze di Figaro in their Ensemble Studio performances, personal highlights during his time in the Studio. In his past seasons, Mr. Fortier-Lazure performed the role of Pelléas in Pelléas et Mélisande, Le Chevalier de la Force in Dialogues des Carmélites and most recently Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi with the Atelier d’Opéra de l’Université de Montréal under the direction of Jean-Francois Rivest. Other highlights include Carmina Burana with the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, Mozart’s Requiem with the Centre d’Arts Orford, Mozart’s Lo sposo deluso with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Zelenka’s Missa Dei Filii and Haydn’s Theresienmesse with the Ottawa Choral Society.

Native of Kitchener-Waterloo, Mr. Fortier-Lazure began his formal vocal training at the University of Ottawa under Laurence Ewashko and continued his studies at the Université de Montréal under Catherine Sévigny. He has participated in young artist training programs with the National Arts Centre, Centre d’Arts Orford and Académie Internationale d’été Nice and was an Artist in Residence of the Marlboro Summer Music Festival. M Fortier-Lazure is the recipient of the Governor General Performing Arts Awards Mentorship Program, paired with the Canadian Bass-Baritone, Joseph Rouleau. Mr Fortier-Lazure is looking forward to returning to the Canadian Opera Company and the National Arts Centre in their coproduction of Louis Riel this spring.
